smaller than the diameter of the hole. The plate and the ball have the same temperature at all times. Should the plate and ball both be heated or both be cooled to prevent the ball from falling though the hole?
Aluminum [ 24x10^(-6) ] has a greater coefficient of thermal expansion than brass [ 19x10^(-6) ] so it expands more when heated. Aluminum also contracts more when cooled.
If cooled, the hole will shrink more than the ball, preventing it from passing through.
