Music Without Cables? - An Overview Of Wireless Audio Transmitter Gadgets
A large number of wireless audio transmitter products have emerged over the years. They claim to eliminate the cord to your audio equipment. We will investigate the influence of new technologies on the performance of these products. Moreover, we'll investigate if they keep their claim of eliminating the cable clutter.
The first type of wireless audio transmission was in the form of AM and FM radio stations. FM radio is still popular until today though some new technologies such as satellite radio and digital radio formats such as HD radio and DAB radio have started to substitute traditional FM radio. Today's wireless consumer devices such as wireless speaker kits, baby monitors, Bluetooth audio transmitters and wireless microphones eliminate the cord.
Many homes which are not wired for audio are perfect for using wireless audio to distribute music throughout the home. We will take a look at the advantages and disadvantages of today's wireless audio technologies.
FM transmitters are utilizing the most traditional technology in which audio is broadcast by altering the frequency of a radio-frequency carrier. This method is called frequency modulation or FM for short. The biggest advantage of FM transmitters is their simplicity and thus cost as well as range. Most of today's wireless consumer products use FM transmission. FM, however, has serious disadvantages in comparison with modern technologies.
The first problem is the fact that the broadcast will pick up noise and thus there will be some hiss or static. The amount of noise will in fact vary based on the location of the radio or receiver. This is due to the fact that the radio signal is bouncing off walls and will cancel itself out at different locations. This phenomenon is called multi-path fading. Using two antennae is one method some devices use to cope with this problem (diversity receivers). FM radios will easily pick up interference from other consumer devices which is another problem.
Bluetooth has gained popularity recently for wireless audio transmission even though this protocol was primarily designed to connect computer peripherals. Bluetooth audio transmitters will convert the audio signal to digital data and then transmit via the Bluetooth protocol. While offering high robustness against wireless interference, Bluetooth has a number of problems in regard to audio transmission since it was never designed with the purpose of transmitting audio. Bluetooth merely offers a range of 30 ft or less and will compress the audio because it does not offer enough room to broadcast an uncompressed CD-quality signal. As a result of the audio compression, the audio quality will decrease. Bluetooth will cause a delay or latency to the audio signal which is a problem for surround sound and video applications because the wireless loudspeakers will be out of sync with the remaining speakers and video.
Terrestrial digital and satellite radio technologies offer high range but use extensive audio compression and have an audio delay of up to several seconds.
The technology used in Amphony's wireless audio transmitters sends audio in a digital format without audio compression. By eliminating audio compression, the signal will preserve the original quality. The audio latency of these products is less than 1 ms and consequently this technology is also used in wireless speaker kits for home theater setups.
By using error correction, this technology can cope with interference from competing wireless products which is key in today’s noisy environment. Amphony products use the 5.8 GHz frequency band which is less crowded than the 900 MHz and 2.4 GHz bands. The result is high reliability. In contrast to Bluetooth, any number of wireless receivers can operate from a single wireless audio transmitter which is a consideration when distributing audio to several rooms within a house.
can you give me guides to make a wireless audio/video transmitter and receiver or sites that can help me?
wireless connector... like from dvd to tv
Hello marlon:
Yes, there are many choices. You can build one, buy a kit to do it, or buy them ready made:
You could build a modulator and connect an antenna to it to wirelessly send a signal to a TV. Here is a link to a PDF describing such and it includes a schematic diagram.

Or, you can buy the kit:

Also, you can buy video transmitters from the following: They are more commonly known as VIDEO SENDERS: Here’s some links to choose from:

A word of caution: Do not put any personal video on such systems that you would not like your neighbors to see, because they may transmit to adjacent houses or apartments.
